Chiropractic

Chiropractic is a regulated primary healthcare profession. Chiropractors are trained to diagnose, treat, manage and prevent disorders of the musculoskeletal system (bones, joints, and muscles), as well as the effects these disorders can have on nervous system and general health.

Chiropractors use a range of techniques to reduce pain, improve function and increase mobility, including hands-on manipulation of the spine. Treatment helps to restore natural movement that has been lost through minor sport injury, degenerative changes or poor posture – and is particularly effective in treating back and neck pain.

Dry needling / Medical acupuncture

Dry needling or medical acupuncture is a treatment technique that uses very fine, single use needles to help break up painful knots in muscles to help decrease pain and improve mobility and function. Muscle tension is common with conditions such as muscle strain and injuries, tension headaches and lower back pain.  Dry needling is frequently used as part of the package of care we offer to patients. All of our chiropractors have Dry needling / medical acupuncture qualifications.

Taping

Taping techniques involve placing strips of special tape on your body in specific directions to help support your joints, like a knee, ankle, or wrist, as well as muscles and tendons. Research has shown that it may help to reduce pain and muscle spasm, improve circulation and lymph transport and improve function and overall performance. Taping is also part of our chiropractic care.

Cupping

Cupping is a therapy that involves placing cups on the skin to create suction. It is thought that this can increase blood circulation to the area where the cups are placed. This may relieve muscle tension, which can improve overall blood flow and promote cellular repair. It may also help form new connective tissues and create new blood vessels in the tissue. Studies in 2015 and 2018 found that cupping may provide some relief for chronic neck or back pain.

Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilisation

Instrument assisted soft tissue mobilisation is simple non-invasive treatment that is aimed to manipulate and mobilise the soft tissues of the body, such as muscles and tendons. We use handheld fascial tools to stimulate blood flow, help relieve muscle pain and discomfort and improve overall mobility and function. It is often used in conjunction with deep tissue massage techniques, medical acupuncture and cupping therapy.

Rehabilitative Exercises

In the right dose, physical activity can help to prevent, treat, and manage a range of health conditions that may impact the quality of life and physical function.

We prescribe safe and effective exercises that encourage your body to recruit or fire the right muscles to keep you moving and achieving your goals while relieving your pain. We want the muscles function better and interact to achieve movement and better mobility. These may include a combination of stretching, strengthening, proprioceptive or ELDOA based exercises depending on your issue and outcome goals.

Adults

Musculoskeletal conditions are the leading contributor to disability worldwide, with low back pain being the single leading cause of disability in 160 countries. We treat patients of all professions at the clinic and treat a wide variety of issues from sporting injuries to problems arising from our increasing sedentary lifestyle as well as the impacts of poor posture.

At your first appointment a thorough consultation will determine the cause of your problem and find the right treatment plan for you. We aim to treat the cause of the problem and minimise the risk of re injury and not just the symptoms. We do this  using a range of techniques to reduce pain, improve function and increase mobility, including hands-on manipulation of the spine and other joints, soft tissue work and advice on self-help, therapeutic exercises, lifestyle changes and postural advice.

Pregnancy

Back pain is very common during pregnancy, with up to three quarters of pregnant women experiencing low back and pelvic pain at some point. And it’s no surprise – your body is going through lots of changes. The ligaments in your body will naturally become softer and stretch to help prepare your body for labour. Combine this with weight gain and postural changes and it is a lot for the body to cope with. We provide tailored chiropractic care to ladies at all stages of their pregnancy.

When you attend the clinic, we’ll make sure you’re as comfortable as possible, adjusting the table to accommodate your growing belly. Treatment is very gentle and our chiropractors use specific techniques to help and alleviate pain and discomfort during pregnancy without placing any pressure on your abdomen. We also hope to help and encourage an easier delivery! Our aim is to provide a high level of care throughout to ensure your comfort and safety during pregnancy and once your little one has arrived.

Babies & Children

The arrival of a new born is one all new parents look forward to. However, for some it may be fraught with difficulties as often a baby doesn’t sleep, cries a lot and may have feeding or digestive problems. Additionally the repercussions following birth can be a struggle for both mother and infant long after.

All our Chiropractors have completed extra training in paediatric care, and are very experienced in treating children of all ages. The techniques we use are both gentle and suitable for babies and we find that most children love to be adjusted. We work along side a number of allied health professionals, including: Midwives, Obstetricians, Doulas, NCT practitioners, and Health Visitors to provide the most appropriate care for your child.

We begin by taking a thorough history of your baby, including factors such as maternal and family history, labour, feeding and sleeping habits, and developmental milestones which can influence your child’s health. This will be followed by a comprehensive physical examination consisting of orthopaedic and neurological tests and a developmental evaluation. It is this thorough approach to examination that allows us to identify the factors that may be influencing your child’s health.

If further testing is required, we can refer your child swiftly and efficiently to an appropriate specialist for such investigation.

General questions

How can I benefit from chiropractic?

Treatment techniques vary between chiropractors. Although they are skilled in a range of therapeutic approaches, chiropractors are perhaps best known for spinal manipulation, a safe and highly effective form of treatment for spinal disorders. Manipulation involves the application of a fast, specific manual thrust to a restricted joint, usually in the spine. It has been shown in independent research trials to be highly beneficial for patients suffering with back pain and and has been recommended in draft guidelines published by the National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE).

At the ECC we believe in an active care programmes to build muscle strength, stamina and endurance. This innovative approach reflects modern developments in chiropractic and medical approaches to back pain to help accelerate healing and promote the rehabilitation process of the affected joint or tissue.

Whether it is getting out of pain, improving how your body functions or maintaining long term change by taking control of your condition, our goal is to help you get solid, measurable results.

What conditions will a Chiropractor help?
  • Acute low back pain
  • Chronic low back pain
  • Mechanical neck pain
  • Chronic neck pain
  • Migraine and tension headaches prevention
  • Extremity joint conditions
What is Chiropractic treatment like?

Chiropractors use their hands to adjust and manipulate the joints of your spine and limbs where signs of restricted movement are found as well as using different techniques to relieve muscle tightness. Areas are treated using gentle, specific manipulation and pumping techniques to restore normal body movement. Treatment aims to make you move better and more freely. Following this they use advanced knowledge of exercise rehabilitation to train support, stability and improve your motor control.

When will you need a Chiropractor?

If your back or joints feel locked, stiff, and sore or maybe haven’t responded to other treatments, then a consultation with a chiropractor may be recommended. Chiropractic care is suitable for all ages from babies to the elderly.

What will happen at your first appointment?

Your whole body will usually be assessed, not just the localised area of pain, so that anything that could be connected to the cause of your problem is looked at and strategies identified to make it less likely to recur.

If required x-rays or an MRI scan advised and organised.

This comprehensive analysis means we will be able to give you a clear understanding of the cause of your particular problem – and the level of treatment needed.

What qualifications will your Chiropractor have?

All chiropractors who practice at our clinic are registered with the General Chiropractic Council having done a masters degree or equivalent in chiropractic.
